Scholarly Articles.
Reading through your research plans this week, I’ve noticed that several people have listed newspapers or magazines for their sources. While it is not inappropriate to use some information derived from periodicals for your papers, please note that newspapers, magazines and general-interest web sites do no qualify as “indisputably academic” sources.
If you haven’t yet reviewed this post from last week, please do so in advance of turning in the first draft of Project 1 this week. Also, you may also find this resource from Cornell University useful.

Other tasks
- As you may have noticed, there is no book required for this class. A microphone, however, is required, and you will need to get one by Week 3. If you have a laptop that is less than 2-3 years old, chances are, a mic is built in. If not, computer microphones can be purchased at local retail outfits like Best Buy or Target for around $20. Amazon.com also has a microphone you might consider here.
- Follow your classmates on Tumblr and Twitter. The class lists are located here.
Notes
- Conferencing: The best way to contact me is through email at rmeehan@mail.usf.edu. However, I understand that sometimes email exchanges can prove frustrating. If you would prefer to conference with me on the phone, I would be happy to chat. Just send me an email request, and we can set up a time.
Week 16.
Congrats. You’ve reached the final week. This week, there will be no new assignments, but below is a summary on what you should be working on to wrap things up this semester:
- Your Final Draft for Project 3 is due Tuesday. Please use the same naming conventions as you have for the first two projects.
- Your revisions for Project 2 are due the following Tuesday (Dec. 8)
- I will be working on getting your Project 3 papers graded so you have ample time for revision (though it is unlikely you will have a full two weeks). Those final revisions will be due back to me Dec. 11, which is the final day of Exam Week.
If you have a moment, please fill out the Course Evaluation here.
Week 15.
Note: I have updated grades on BlackBoard to reflect your Final Grades for Project One as well as your completion grades for Project 2 and 3 Drafts. I will also be calculating your final Informal Writing grades in the coming week or so. Please review the grades I uploaded, and let me know if you notice any discrepancies.

Your responses to Michael Wesch reminded me of this great article from The New York Times Magazine a few months ago. It’s about the infrastructure of the Internet. It’s not required reading or an assignment. I am only sharing it because I thought you might find it interesting.
The Machine Is Using Us?
You might say we’ve moved from pencils to pixels ;)
This video actually made a lot of sense. Initially, I didn’t realize how much of a hassle it can be to write thoughts and rough drafts down-using a pencil. But as the video progressed, it dawned on me that so much of the use of computer technology is second-nature to us. What I mean by that is we generally don’t realize how many times we press the ‘delete’ key on our computer; or go back to add a word or two in a sentence- all with a click of a mouse. I can still remember having to erase entire lines just to put in a few extra words while writing for an assignment. I think that we are using the machine; and with that I mean that we take this technology for granted most of the time-yet we are the ones creating it. Thus, we are the ‘machine’ and we are utilizing the use of the device we created.
Week 14.
Formal Writing
Draft 1 + Peer Review
Let’s follow the same process we used for Project 2. Your draft for Project 3 is due Saturday night. Please submit the public link from Google Docs here so that I know it is complete. On Sunday night next week, I will send out the Peer Review list so that all documents can be reviewed.

This is a good example of sound academic analysis. Steven’s voice here is detached from the subject matter. He concentrates only on identifying the types of appeals each singer makes, and he explains how they function.
