Public Writing Assignment #1
I am now going to ask you to apply what you have learned these past few weeks about rhetoric and argument by responding to a work online of your choosing. Here are the guidelines:
- The work that you choose should concern an issue that you personally care about.
- There must be a mechanism for public response attached to the work. For example, you may feel compelled to respond to a picture like this one, but because there is no way you can comment publicly on it, it doesn’t qualify. Most social news sites, newspaper web sites, video sites (like YouTube) etc, provide commenting systems that can be readily used (though you may have to sign up.)
- The content, style and length of the comment should be dictated by the expectations of the community in which you are submitting the comment. In other words, keep “kairos” in mind.
- After you’ve made your comment, submit a permalink to the specific comment (if possible) or a link to the page where it resides and tag the blog post “public writing 1”.
- Add the entry as a “Link” post in Tumblr, and in the “Description” field, briefly (150 words or less) describe the approach you took the argument you made in your comment, discussing specifically the factors that led you to sculpt the comment the way you did.
Note: This assignment is why I had you sign up for an account at nytimes.com, but I ultimately decided to make it less prescriptive. The New York Times does allow readers to comment, but the comments are moderated, which means it may take a few hours for your comment to be approved and “go live.”
