How can you tell if a source is peer reviewed or refereed?

This question has come up a few times this week in response to the requirement on Project 1 that you include “two indisputably academic sources.” It’s a good question to ask.

First, I invite you to look at this page from the University of Texas, which succinctly defines what “peer reviewed” means.

Next, for more specific guidance, you can check the standing of the publication you are considering using through Ulrich’s Periodical Directory. You can access Ulrich’s by logging into Blackboard, clicking the USF Libraries Tab, selecting “USF Libraries,” clicking “Databases by Title/Subject” and searching for Ulrich’s.

Once there, you can search for the publication and determine its status. If it comes up as “refereed,” you are good to go.
